Heart of the City

Ever since the railroads there brought people in and products out, the parts of Atlanta just west of Midtown have been a steady engine of progress, with a restless kind of energy. Today, the Monte Hewett homes at Interlock continue benefitting from the ongoing enterprise and invention that characterizes West Midtown.

People are surprised sometimes to find out how new a city Atlanta really is. While the great coastal cities of the South – such as Savannah and Charleston – owe their reasons for being to the sailing ships of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was the mechanical age, the steam engine, and the railroads that resulted that gave rise to Atlanta. In fact, the city was named for the Western & Atlantic Railroad, which made its terminus here.

Like a Benediction

As a crossroads for rail lines, the name Interlock might seem like an “of course.” And yet, Interlock emerged from the neighborhood itself, much like an old inscription on a wall. “Interlock” is like a whisper from the past or a hieroglyphic inscription on a monument to victory.

For at least three years, the Howell Mill Road site at 14th Street was vacant. The vision for locating Atlanta townhomes here became a $140 million urban, mixed-use complex that includes 200,000 square feet of new office space, more than 300 apartment units, and 90,000 square feet of retail. Planning for those elements to come together is no less than the state of the art for making cities livable, desirable for a generation of knowledge-based workers who don’t compromise on quality of life for their careers.

Making live-work-learn-play into more than the sum of its parts for these fortunate townhomes in Atlanta meant adding pedestrian and bike-friendly paths, a boutique hotel, and a blend of dining-and-shopping options. Because technology today never holds still, Interlock also includes 50,000 square feet of enterprise-incubator space for the Georgia Technology Venture.

The Essence of Resilience

It has been Atlanta’s power to connect that has seen us through more than one re-birth, and which has kept us at the forefront of economic development, the capital of a whole region. Carrying on this inheritance, this capacity for resilience, is the power behind the value of the Monte Hewett homes at Interlock, and its success is already evident.

Interlock instantly became a premier live-work-play neighborhood. Unsurpassed now as a destination for entertainment, dining, shopping, and fun, Interlock also makes it unnecessary to go home – or at least to depart for home – because the discerning residents of Interlock are already there. It’s a decision well worth considering.

Behind the Decision

When asked what’s behind that decision, people say the design of the home interiors, the streetscapes, the bike-friendly and walk-friendly neighborhood, the nearness – and the coolness – of things to do, see, and make your own counted heavily in favor of living here. In the end, though, most residents eventually come down to a factor that includes all these things and yet rises above them, too. It’s a feeling unique to Interlock, and it awaits your further investigation.
